Saint-pierre / Saint Peter (last)

After the mass , the statue of Saint Pierre will be put on a "pointu ".
Then , all the boats will sail as  a parade out of the harbour.
Flowers will be sent on the waves,
as a tribute to the lost ones .

During the mass , the "pointus" are waiting in the harbour.

Saint-Pierre / Saint Peter (3)

Every year , the boat of the poorest fisherman is sentenced:

The "pointu" will be burned at the end of the day.

Then , each of the fishermen of the harbour will give some money,

and all together , they'll buy a new boat for the man ,
so that he can go on earning his living in the best conditions.

Saint-Pierre / Saint Peter (2)

To decorate the "pointus"( as we call here the fishing small boats )

is an other part of the tradition.

Partner in crime

As someone said in a comment that I was "the queen of postcards",

I'd like to thank here the guy who kindly and  regularly helps me to look for my kind of things in his collections and sells  them to me .

You'll find him (and often me!) at the market of the Palais de Justice every first, third and fourth saturday of each month.

Festival de Cannes

Today is the last day of the worldwide  famous

But long before becoming the city of movies , stars and glamour ,

the place was a simple  harbour for fishermen.

Later, during the XIXth century,
the town began to attract tourists and painters,
both loving its light and its beauty.

Let's not forget our roots !

Saint-Pierre / Saint Peter (1)

Even if the Mediterranean Sea seems quiet and calm ,
sailors always needed protection to be sure to get back to the harbour;

 Here in  Nice , fishermen
are protected by Saint Pierre.
And since middle Age, each year , they thank their protector.

First , there's a mass, that takes place in the church of the port.

As a guard of honor ,
young people are dressed with historical costumes.

And this is our beloved "Capeline" ,
this special hat that women used to wear .

Then and now

What was an harbour became a beach,

with a small port round the corner.

Nesting a  little more boats , well ranked .

But the beautiful Villa Kerylos is still standing proudly,

showing the everlasting beauty of the mediterranean world ..
